Survey & Route Engineering

Pelagian is engaged in survey and route engineering activities for both shallow and deepwater operations worldwide. Our consultants provide the survey and route engineering expertise needed to give the customer confidence that the survey data being acquired is suitable for detailed in-field cable route planning.

Pelagian has the capability to provide its customers with a full survey solution using well established strategic partnerships with a number of the world's survey companies. Pelagian's consultants are dedicated surveyors, geophysicists and engineers with many years of offshore survey experience in submarine cables, renewable energy, oil and gas and dredging.

Survey

Pelagian's engineers have a comprehensive knowledge of vessel navigation, multibeam echo sounders, acoustic positioning, sidescan sonar, shallow seismic profiling, sediment sampling, CPT measurement and magnetometer surveys; all valuable tools for the assessment of the marine environment for a submarine cable.

Pelagian conducts its own survey programs and has well established contracts for annual depth of burial surveys in Europe.

Our consultants advise the customer on annual changes in depth of burial and working closely with our installation experts devise mitigation strategies to ensure the cable remains adequately protected from external influences.

Route Engineering

Pelagian's route engineers use state of the art technology to assist with the design and installation of fibre optic and power cables. The cornerstone of Pelagian's route engineering approach is MakaiPlan GIS software which is the industry standard for the design and modelling of submarine cables.

MakaiPlan provides specific tools for the planning of cable routes, enabling the skilled engineer to interactively design the cable route, select cable types and calculate cable quantities.

In most cases the cable route is engineered in near real time, from data processed onboard the survey vessel, speeding up the process of cable manufacturing and cutting installation delays to a minimum.

Pelagian's engineers use their comprehensive experience to advise the customer on burial feasibility, selection of cable armouring and protection and risk assessment of steep terrain and crossings of existing cables and pipelines.
